Although I appreciate that FFmpeg is smart enough to realize that select outputs two streams and blend takes two as an input, so I don't have to futz with [v] stuff. I've used Yadif with great success, including critical things like camera originals shot interlaced which were needed as progressive. I'm not sure what techniques it uses, but I suspect it uses some adaptive stuff to avoid blurring stationary objects.

However, in the case of bit Prores you will have your input reduced to 10 bit but that is a limitation of ffmpeg's Prores implementation decoder s and encoder s rather than yadif.
With 12bit prores being rather rare in the wild and the difference being rather hard to detect probably just when doing heavy gradingit seems this hasn't bothered many people so far. There is one caveat here regarding standard-definition TV material. Suppose you have a recording on DVD in standard p widescreen format. Mind how this does not correspond to a ratio even though your TV displays it as such, it is actually a ratio.
What gives? Well, your TV knows that the video is supposed to be displayed as and will therefore stretch it horizontally while rendering the image. This means the pixels are not square, like they are in all recent formats like p and p. When converting such a DVD to a video file on a hard disk, you may be tempted to make the pixels square. Same as source will output I think The Decomb filter also has a Bob option, so I assume it'd work the same way. If you use the variable frame rate option I've no idea what'll happen.
I'm no expert when it comes to de-interlacing but I think the best idea is to de-interlace if the video is interlaced and disable it completely when it isn't. Alternative you use a filter like Decomb and hope it makes the correct choice most of the time. I can't tell you how well it works as I've not encoded with it much. I did try a few little test encodes a while back and thought it did a good job but I wouldn't take that as gospel. Maybe a Handbrake user will come along It's not hard to use once you get it working, and if there's progressive sections it shouldn't adversely effect them.

You may find that you have enough resources to use a powerful deinterlacer for your SDTV i content, but you need to use a less resource-hungry deinterlacer for i. There is a python script available for Comparing deinterlacers. The best deinterlacers will double the frame rate typically For each field, they will build a whole frame. This requires that your display be able to operate at this doubled frame rate. Surprisingly some displays are just a hair below that, in which case MythTV will switch to your "fallback" deinterlacer, as set on your configuration screen.
Doubling the frame rate requires a lot more resources. Some video comes at 25fps, which doubles to 50fps and should not have a problem with the monitor refresh rate. You may also encounter problems with loss of deinterlacing if doing time stretch.
Your TV probably has a fairly good quality hardware deinterlacer. To make use of those hardware deinterlacers, you must have your video card output an interlaced video signal to the TV. Because you will not want to use interlaced output for p or p video, you will want to set up MythTV to use different video modes depending on what type of stream is being played.
